Song of Summer - Sevierville, Tennessee
It looks as though he perches on air.
A high wire aerialist balanced on an ambitiously lanky wildflower, holding court over chaotic throngs of Black-Eyed Susans and Queen Anne’s Lace. The sun moves in a slow burn through a robin-egg July sky – the breeze barely stirring – and the territorial song of this Red Winged Blackbird hangs suspended in mid-air, too. Spied from the artist’s studio window… it’s an aimless, dreamy summer afternoon when the high trill breaks the peace. First, familiar notes. Then, an unexpected flash of light glints across a crimson-stained ebony wing. There’s more to this meadow than first meets the eye. Here in the thick of summer, he’s the town crier. Once the dog days arrive and the young leave the nest, he is still.
Two watercolor studies later, the carefree summer caroler emerges from the studio suspended this time on a sun-splattered oil canvas. Forever in his artful balancing act. Always in the middle of his Song of Summer.
